Start with the application

A small website may need files, a database and a supported language runtime. If those needs fit a hosting account, shared hosting can keep the operating system outside your maintenance responsibilities. A VPS gives you a broader environment, but it also gives you the operating system to maintain.

Access changes the job

Root access lets you install packages and change services. It also lets you break access, expose a service or remove important data. Choose it because your application needs system-level control, then plan updates, firewall rules and recovery access.

Count the supporting work

An application needs more than CPU and storage. Someone must keep software current, manage credentials and restore data when something goes wrong. Document who owns each task. If several people maintain a website, separate their access and keep a copy of configuration changes.

Make a small, testable move

Before migrating, copy files and export the database. Test the destination using a safe method before changing DNS. Keep the previous environment and backup long enough to verify that the new one works. The right hosting choice is the one whose responsibilities you can actually meet.
