GOOD TO KNOW

What to know about GLWS Hybrid dedicated servers.

The decisions that matter before you pick a size.

Know what is reserved

Hybrid plans reserve the vCPU and memory listed. They are not the same as leasing a complete physical server.

Build around steady demand

Measure your normal CPU and memory use first, then leave room for busy periods and maintenance.

Keep Linux familiar

Use a supported Linux image, automate your setup where you can and keep a recovery copy of your data.

Choose your operating system

Pick one your software supports, with security updates. Windows images come with separate licence terms.

Keep your own backups

Keep a copy off the server. Snapshots and redundant storage are not a substitute for an independent, tested backup.

Know what is exposed

Write down your open ports, public services and who can log in. Keep only the access you need.

MANAGEMENT

Plan how you will manage it.

Access and recovery are worth deciding before day one.

Administrative access

You administer a dedicated server yourself. Decide who can log in, how you would reach the machine if networking failed, and where your backups live.

  • Know who owns the account and who has access
  • Keep recovery copies off the server
  • Test changes on a copy first

FAQ

GLWS Hybrid dedicated servers questions.

Quick answers before you choose a plan.

Is a hybrid server a full dedicated server?

No. Hybrid plans reserve the resources listed. Dedicated plans give you a whole machine.

When should I look at dedicated instead?

When your demand is high and steady, or you need full control of the hardware or stronger isolation.

How should I choose a size?

List the application, database and background processes you will run. Estimate memory and storage together, then leave headroom for updates, logs and busy periods.

How do I configure a plan?

Pick a plan to open the configurator, then choose your operating system, location and billing period and continue to the review step. You can change any choice before you continue.

Where can I learn the basics?

Visit the Linux knowledge base for practical guides on SSH, updates, firewalls, services and backups.
